The EIS team behind Disability Table Tennis
The Disability Table Tennis squad have utilised the services of the EIS since the beginning of this current Paralympic cycle. Out of their base at EIS-Sheffield they have taken advantage of the performance impacting benefits that physiotherapy, psychology, strength & conditioning and performance lifestyle can offer.
EIS Performance Psychologist to the squad Chris Marshall has worked with the team since the start of the cycle and in particular the coaches. He said; “In the early stages of the programme we focussed on profiling the entire squad, looking at the strengths and development needs of each player. This enabled the coaching team to gain a better understanding of the shared opinions of each athlete’s needs. We then worked as a wider coaching and sport science team to individualise training to both develop their strengths and sure up any weaknesses.”
“There was also a heavy emphasis on providing the players with match and training experience abroad to ensure they maximised the opportunity to play against some of the world’s best players more consistently”
The relationship with Disability Table Tennis is lead by Claire Hague, EIS Performance Operations Manager in Sheffield and former Olympic swimmer and Commonwealth Games gold medallist. Of the relationships with EIS, Claire said:
“In this cycle the players and table tennis staff have embraced the support that the EIS has provided to them. All of our practitioners have developed strong relationships with the sport and are an integral part of the team. They all relish working with this group of highly motivated players who in return have made the most of the opportunity to maximise performance gains.”
