EIS Presents At Joint International Conference

by James Skitt - 21.08.09

Leading practitioners from the English Institute of Sport (EIS) are among presenters at the International Sport Science and Sport Medicine (ISSSM) Conference 2009, currently being held in Newcastle.

The three day event, which concludes on Saturday, brings together national and international experts, alongside those who work in elite sport, to look at a range of issues in the build up to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and beyond.

The programme will consist of two days during which parallel sessions in sport medicine and sport science will run, with the afternoons  featuring  plenary sessions, whilst on the  final day  a series of presentations will translate the medicine and science into practical messages for coaches, team doctors and sports science support staff.

EIS Director of Sport Medicine Dr Rod Jaques will deliver a presentation on prehabilitation, whilst other EIS presenters include Dr Stuart Miller, who will give a team doctors perspective on lessons learnt in all sports from the Beijing Paralympic Games, and EIS Head of Performance Nutrition Dr Sam Stear, who will speak on the use of dietary supplements during a session addressing the issue of strategies for staying healthy.

EIS Regional Director for the North, Peter Elliott, a former Olympic middle distance runner himself, will also be in attendance to chair a Physiology session looking into what limits middle distance performance.

Dr Jaques, who is also on the programme committee for the conference, told eis2win.co.uk: “The EIS is delighted to support the first joint sport science and sport medicine conference in the UK in collaboration with partners One North East, Northumbria University, Lucozade Sport and Newcastle Malmaison.”

“I very much hope that this will become an annual event and a European Conference leader in years to come.”

Delegates attending this year’s conference include those representing the European Sport Medicine Congress, the Institute of Sport & Recreation Management, the German Academy of Applied Sports Medicine, the British Association of Sport & Exercise Science (BASES), the British Association of Sport & Exercise Medicine (BASEM) and several British universities.
