HISTORY OF THE EIS
1995
Plans for a British Academy of Sport were first announced by the then Prime Minister, John Major
1997
Initiative re-launched as the UK Sports Institute (UKSI) with Sheffield selected as the central hub site
1999
Sport England announced plans to develop a £120 million network of English Institute Centres.
2000
A central services operation, supported by UK Sport, was launched after the Sydney Olympics – an 18 month trial period for the English Institute of Sport (EIS) began.
2002
The EIS was officially ‘launched’ – providing sports science and medical support services to elite athletes in England through a network of regional centres.
2005
London won the bid to host the 2012 Olympiad
2006
Transfer of EIS ownership from Sport England to UK Sport. The EIS becomes a wholly owned subsidiary of UK Sport – grant funded through the UK Sport Lottery Fund.
2008
Conor O'Shea takes over National Directorship from Wilma Shakespear.
