Leading practitioners from the English Institute of Sport (EIS) were among presenters at the International Sport Science and Sport Medicine (ISSSM) Conference 2010 held in Newcastle last week.
The conference, supported by the EIS, brought together national and international experts alongside those who work in elite sport to look at a range of issues in the build up to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and beyond. The conference is unrivalled worldwide in its approach of drawing together experts in sports science, sports medicine and coaching within one programme.
Among over 30 invited speakers and chairs, presenters from the EIS included Director of Medical Services Dr Rod Jaques, who chaired a session on the subject of when can an athlete safely return to play; Senior Biomechanist Paul Brice who presented on the practical biomechanics in athletics; whilst a symposium on optimising adaptation to training, was delivered by EIS experts from a range of disciplines.
Chaired by EIS Director of Sport Science Ken van Someren, the symposium, delivered by Raph Brandon (Head of Strength and Conditioning), Jamie Pringle (Senior Physiologist) and Kevin Currell (Senior Performance Nutritionist), discussed applied approaches taken to optimise adaptation to physical training, addressing key issues including the individual response to training, management of training load and recovery strategies.
“The number of EIS staff invited to present, and who presented their original research for presentation, is testament to the quality of our staff and their work” van Someren told eis2win.co.uk.
“The EIS made a significant contribution to the conference, providing an insight into applied sports science and medicine at the very elite level of sport.”
Now in its second year, the conference was attended by delegates from all over the world including Australia, Canada, Norway, the Netherlands, France and Portugal, whilst English Institute of Sport Chairman Steve Cram was also in attendance to celebrate 25 years since breaking three world records in 19 days, with delegates having the opportunity to quiz him during a question and answer session.
