Achieving Excellence in High Performance Sport

A new publication on Achieving Excellence in High Performance Sport has hit the shelves, featuring some of the English Institute of Sport's (EIS) top practitioners.
Co-written by Sarah Rowell and Tim Kyndt, Achieving Excellence in High Performance Sport details the experiences and skills behind medal winning performances for those working towards a career in the field.
The 200-page paperback features case studies with a number of EIS staff with the foreword written by London 2012 Olympic rowing gold medallist Katherine Grainger.
Aimed at aspiring practitioners and coaches, the book includes case studies with EIS central lead strength and conditioning coach Jared Deacon and head of sport science and medicine for Paralympic sports Nik Diaper.
Interviewees included in the book come from a range of sports practitioner disciplines across both Olympic and Paralympic sports, whilst detailing how aspiring practitioners need to gain trust with athletes, and how to develop strong interpersonal skills.
Dr Sarah Rowell is a former Olympic marathon runner and British record holder. She is currently Director of High Performance for World Class Lifting, Fellow of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) and is also Chair of Selectors for UK Athletics mountain running teams.
She was previously a technical consultant to the EIS and now works with the EIS on the people development programme.
Tim Kyndt is a business psychologist who works with the English Institute of Sport, UK Sport, Paralympics GB, Scottish Institute of Sport and Sport Northern Ireland in the design, development and delivery of management, mentoring and coaching development programmes.
Professor Ken van Someren, Director of Sport Science at the English Institute of Sport, said:
“Through a series of case studies, [this book] highlight the values, attitudes, skills and behaviours that underpin excellence in this field and in doing so, provide a very valuable insight and resource for those training for careers in high performance sport.”
