Biomechanists from the English Institute of Sport (EIS) presented at the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) Annual Conference this week.
National Biomechanics Lead Dr. Valery Kelshnev, along with fellow EIS Biomechanists Oliver Logan, Paul Brice and Angela Hibbs, presented a symposium entitled ‘Practical biomechanics with elite athletes’ to delegates at Brunel University in London.
“The main purpose of the symposium was to bridge a gap between the academic world and that of high performance biomechanists, who quite often experience difficulties with publishing due to the exceptional and confidential nature of their studies” explained Kleshnev.
The presentation included Kleshnev giving an explanation of the key role played by biomechanical analysis in the success of the British rowers at the recent Olympic Games, where 2 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals were won.
There then followed examples of how the analysis is used in the sports of archery and swimming from Logan and Hibbs respectively, with Hibbs also outlining interesting developments in the application of EMG (Electromyography). Paul Brice also detailed his work with long and triple jump athletes.
The talk, organised with the support of conference organiser Paul Dent of Brunel University, received a positive reaction from conference delegates with the presentation being followed by some productive discussion.
In a separate presentation another EIS Biomechanist, Dave Coleman, detailed the findings of his research on the correlation of muscle stiffness and running efficiency.
