Minister for Sport and Olympics Hugh Robertson MP met with sport science and sport medicine practitioners from the English Institute of Sport (EIS) during a visit to EIS Sheffield today.

The Minister was given a tour of the EIS High Performance Centre at the venue by EIS Regional Director Peter Elliott, speaking to staff from a range of disciplines, working across a range of high performance athletes who access support from the site.

The EIS High Performance Centre at EIS Sheffield provides a base for athletes across a range of sports including boxing, table tennis, disability table tennis, diving, volleyball and athletics amongst others, as well as hosting a number of major training camps and sporting events.

Speaking of his visit the Minister for Sport and Olympics, Hugh Robertson said: “Without doubt the EIS is now considered an integral part of the sporting high performance system – providing the backbone of sport science and medical support upon which many of our sports and athletes have become reliant.

“Today I’ve had the opportunity to see how it works in practice and how seamlessly the EIS and NGB support staff work together – quite unique and an approach that is clearly working.”

The Minister also met with staff and athletes from Disability Table Tennis and British Volleyball as well as GB Boxing, where he watched a training session before taking the opportunity to speak with athletes and members of their EIS sport science and medicine support team.

EIS Regional Director Peter Elliott said: “The visit provided us with a great opportunity to demonstrate how developed the sport science and medical support infrastructure now is.

“The impact of government funding and support on service delivery is clear to see, whether visiting one of our High Performance Centres, a sports training session or competition. Today was an opportunity to showcase that."
