Practitioners Learn More on Developing Area

Nutritionists and Physiologists from the English Institute of Sport (EIS) discovered more about molecular biology from world leading experts at a master class in London last week.

The day, which included presentations from Dr Keith Baar and Andrew Philp of Dundee University, provided the EIS Performance Nutrition team with the opportunity to learn more about a subject which is still a developing area in the nutrition field.

The programme included three talks from the main speakers outlining the basic processes in molecular biology, the role of muscle glycogen in the adaptation to training and how different nutrients can affect mitochondrial biogenesis.

EIS Performance Nutritionist Kevin Currell, who hosted the event, told eis2win.co.uk; “Everyone learnt a lot from the two world class academic speakers who presented on new research areas which could impact on British athletes performances in 2010, 2012 and beyond” he said.

As a subject of interest across disciplines members of the EIS Physiology team were also in attendance on the day, which concluded with case study presentations from EIS Nutritionists Alex Popple, Nathan Lewis and Bethanie Allanson, who shared their experiences of molecular biology research in the sports of swimming, sailing and athletics respectively.

“It was a really thought provoking day and the feedback from the nutrition team has been very positive” Currell said.
