Professor Kevin Thompson, currently EIS Regional Manager for the North West and North East regions, has been appointed to the post of Director of Sports Science.
Prof Thompson was formerly Manager of Coaching, Sports Science and Sports Medicine at the Welsh Institute of Sport and prior to that lectured in physiology at UWIC, Cardiff as Course Director of the MSc in Sport and Exercise Science. In 2006 he was awarded the BASES High Performance Sport Accreditation and has recently held the Chair of BASES Sport and Performance Division.
EIS National Director, Conor O’Shea welcomed the appointment:
“I am delighted that Kevin has accepted the position after our national search for a suitable candidate. He has made an outstanding contribution to the EIS to date and has been integral to getting EIS to the position we are in now – provider of choice for sports science and medical support services.
“Kevin will bring to the role a unique appreciation of not only technical knowledge but also a wider holistic understanding of the needs of sports and their athletes. His key focus will be to really drive forward sports science development and delivery, supporting our national sports science leads, in the pursuit of medal winning margins.”
Thompson will take up his new role in January 2009.
