Dr Ken van Someren will take charge as EIS Director of Sports Science this week, ensuring the English Institute of Sport (EIS) continues to develop their world class sports science services into the new Olympiad, beginning in April.

He will replace Professor Kevin Thompson who, after undertaking the role in an interim period since January 09, has decided to step down due to personal commitments and will be joining Northumbria University.

“I have really enjoyed working at the EIS over the last 6+ years and am tremendously proud to see how far it has come and how successful it has been during the last Olympic cycle" says Thompson.

" I would like to thank Steve Cram, Conor O’Shea and all those staff I have worked closely with at the EIS" he adds.

Speaking of the changes, EIS National Director, Conor O’Shea said:

“We are pleased Kevin was able to use this interim period to assess whether he could fulfil the role through the next cycle. The EIS are committed to ensuring the best drive for sports science across the network and we are therefore delighted to announce that Ken van Someren has accepted the post having impressed the panel during the recent recruitment process.”

Having worked with the EIS for over three years as National Lead for Physiology, van Someren’s experience working across a number of sports and across disciplines will set him in good stead for the Olympic and Paralympic cycles ahead as well as working with a number of English sports.

“I am delighted to be taking on the role of Director of Sport Science within the EIS" says van Someren.

“The priority areas will be to ensure appropriate levels of delivery in the next funding cycle and the development of EIS sport science services in terms of people, knowledge and practice" he adds.
