Para Table Tennis

"The benefit of having all the EIS support staff in the same building which we train in means we are able to complete our gym, physiotherapy and psychology programmes and any recovery we need to do in close proximity. It makes the process flow so much more easily. Every time people come to the centre to train with us they are amazed at the facilities we have access to on a day-to-day basis."
Aaron McKibbin Twice Paralympic bronze medallist

A highly skilled and technical sport, with ten physical classification, the GB Para Table Tennis programme encompasses men’s and women’s singles and team events involving a combination of classes with two to three players.

UKSI Sport Science and Medical practitioners work closely with athletes and their coaches to identify the performance questions for each individual athlete, working together to understand ability and impairments and their impact on function and performance. With one major competition a year, practitioners have helped to develop a ten-week preparation programme, focussing on training times and strength and conditioning movement sessions.

In addition to the physical training, Performance Psychology plays a significant role working with athletes with a neurological disorder to determine their ability to deal with pressure and how this impacts their physical performance. A pressure training programme has been developed to assist athletes to perform under the pressure of a close game, fatigue or where they cannot play through their usual method.
