The EIS announces members of new Technical Steering Panel

Tash Carpenter | 07 April 2020

The English Institute of Sport (EIS) has today announced that the following experts will be joining the EIS’s new Technical Steering Panel, the latest EIS proactive effort to ensure best practice in athlete support through science, medicine and technology.

  • Prof James Morton, Liverpool John Moores University
  • Prof Sue Backhouse, Leeds Beckett University
  • Dr Charlotte Cowie, The FA
  • Prof Steve Haake, Sheffield Hallam University

The Technical Steering Panel is an expert panel which provides independent advice and oversight on technical projects and practice conducted by the EIS. Projects will be referred to the panel by the EIS Senior Leadership Team or the EIS Board, where an independent view or assessment is required.

In addition the Panel will act as a ‘horizon-scanning’ group for the EIS Board and Senior Leadership Team, identifying and advising on any potentially high-risk areas or issues within research and practice in science, medicine and technology. As such the Panel’s establishment is the latest EIS effort to ensure it is developing and delivering world-leading support to British Olympic and Paralympic sports.

Dr Ken van Someren, EIS Board member and Technical Steering Panel lead said:

“This new panel will help the EIS deliver its remit from UK Sport to provide the best possible governance for sports science, medicine and performance support.

“I am delighted we have such a wealth of experience and expertise on the Panel and I look forward to working with members to assist the EIS in delivering outstanding support and value to sports.”

Each of the four Panel members will serve an initial two year term. The Terms of Reference for the Panel can be found in the Governance section of the EIS website.
