Performance Data Support

UK Sports Institute (UKSI) Performance Data team enable and empower people to create performance insight from data.

There are three focus areas for the Performance Data team for Mission 2025:

  1. World Class Programme Support

  2. UK Sports Institute Initiatives

  3. Learning & Community

World Class Programme Performance Support

Enabling sports to leverage the value data in their unique performance context

For example, by really understanding the people and unique performance context of a sport to deliver projects that create valuable new insight from performance data or supporting the development of a data strategy.

The Performance Data team brought with them a huge amount of knowledge from working with other sports across the system and, based on our nuances and context, were able to translate that to the specific needs of Canoe Sprint, which was brilliant.

UK Sports Institute Performance Data Initiatives

Enable common data needs to be met with centrally managed services

We develop and run data products and services across the data lifecycle. For example, creating and operating systems and reports for athlete health and exercise programming, allowing all sports to easily capture and use performance data.

We have already come so far and yet the journey is just getting started. The systems, tools and most importantly people are now set up to enable the efficient and effective communication of information vital to understand the biggest health challenges to athlete wellbeing and performance, so that health and performance planning can be integrated and optimised.

Learning & Community

Empower people with the knowledge and skills to realise the potential of data

We have a growing data community who actively support one another and have developed a series of modules on our UK Sports Institute Learning Arena that develops people’s practical skills when working with data. For example, capturing, preparing and structuring data, to qualitative, quantitative analysis and visualising data. In 2022 we are launching our UK Sports Institute Data Leadership programme, to accelerate the development and connectivity of data leads across the High-Performance System.

Data is a growing skill set that’s needed in all professions across science and medicine. As we continue to deliver outstanding support to sports and athletes, the demand for that’s only ever going to grow and it’s essentially in our new dawn of learning within the Institute that practitioners can access the knowledge, the skills they need, when they need to deliver their job. Data skills and knowledge will be an essential part of practitioner development both now and in the future.
